Dioxin Reassessment (Draft Documents, September 2000)
spacer
NOTICE:ÊÊTHESE DOCUMENTS ARE PRELIMINARY DRAFTS. They have not been formally released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and should not at this stage be construed to represent Agency policy or factual conclusions. These documents are being provided now for review to EPA's Science Advisory Board.ÊÊThey should not be cited or referred to as EPA's final assessment of dioxin risks.

The EPA Dioxin Reassessment effort began in 1991, when EPA announced that it would conduct a scientific reassessment of the health risks resulting from exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and chemically similar compounds collectively known as dioxin. The process for developing the Dioxin Reassessment has been open and participatory. Each portion of the reassessment has been developed in collaboration with scientists from inside and outside the Federal Government. In September, 1994, EPA released the public review draft of the Dioxin Reassessment Documents which included three major reports: Estimating Exposure to Dioxin-Like Compounds, Health Assessment Document for 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and Related Compounds, and Risk Characterization of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and Related Compounds. The September 1994 release of the draft Dioxin Reassessment Documents was followed by a 150-day comment period and 11 public meetings around the country to receive oral and written comments. In addition to this public review each document was reviewed by EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB). In response to the SAB, public comments, and newly available scientific information EPA has been working to revise and updated the 1994 draft and is committed to completing and releasing a final dioxin reassessment early in calendar year 2001. Information on the current status of development of the dioxin reassessment and access to the current working drafts of selected portions of the reassessment is available here.

Dioxin Exposure Initiative (DEI)
spacer
In 1994, the EPA embarked upon a research program to further evaluate the exposure of Americans to this class of compounds. This program is called, The Dioxin Exposure Initiative, abbreviated the DEI. The DEI is a research program jointly funded and managed by the Office of Research and Development and the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances. Further information on the DEI is available here.

Database of Sources of Environmental Releases of Dioxin-like Compounds in the United StatesÊ(EPA/600/C-01/012, March, 2001)
spacer
The purpose of this database is to document congener-specific emissions and environmental releases of polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (CDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (CDFs) from known source activities in the U.S. Included within the database are facility-specific emissions for a variety of CDD/CDF sources, and congener-specific I-TEQ and WHODF-TEQ emission factors. The database contains information that can be used to track CDD/CDF emissions over time; develop and compare congener-specific and homologue profiles for source categories; and to develop congener-specific emission factors that can then be used to undertake an emissions inventory of sources. The database is associated with two reference years: 1995 and 1987.
