The NYS Department of Health has at long last released the "New York State
West Nile Virus Response Plan" and, sometime within the last couple of
days, posted it on their website
(http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/westnile/index.htm). The "Response
Plan" is a 255-page document, available in html and pdf formats
http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/westnile/final/report.pdf.
It is an important document for understanding what government agencies*
have been doing and are planning to do to prevent recurrence of WNV and to
control it, should the virus recur. Information is also given about the
pesticides labelled for use in controlling mosquitoes; about mosquito,
animal and human surveillance; health impacts; etc.
*Although many mosquito control decisions are made on the county (and NYC)
level, the NYS Department of Health is the lead agency within the state and
clearly works closely with the County mosquito control personnel (who are
found either within County Departments of Health or in Departments of
Public Works).
