As of May 28, 2002 West Nile Virus has been detected in at least 10 states as well as in Washington DC, and in mosquitoes in the Negev Desert in Israel. In most cases the detection of WNV was significantly earlier this season than in previous years. E.g., In previous years WNV-positive mosquitoes in Israel were not detected until mid-summer and first detection in Massachusetts is 7 weeks earlier than in 2001. WNV has been detected in birds and/or horses in several locations in Florida (first announced Feb 18, 2002), in a cardinal found at a residence in Baton Rouge (announced March 21, 2002) and horses (ann May 23) in the SW part of Louisiana, in birds in Pennsylvania (found Apr 29 north of Philadelphia), Virginia (found Apr 8 and 19), New Jersey (first group found Apr 16-May 3), Washington DC (found May 1), Illinois (found May 2), New York (first report May 16), Connecticut (found May 16), Massachusetts (found May 21) and Georgia.
