2002 -- Since this is the 4th year in a row that WNV has been
detected in our state, and fortunately it has not caused widespread human
mortality as was initially feared, there has been a growing complacency
about this mosquito-borne disease. However, although it is rarely
fatal, WNV can cause unpleasant (flu-like) and sometimes long-lasting
symptoms in people. It also presents a serious risk to unvaccinated
horses, and is now endemic throughout much of the Eastern United
States--appearing in many places months earlier than in previous
seasons. Thus it is worthwhile for CCE educators to advocate
sensible precautionary measures to reduce mosquito populations, vaccinate
horses, and protect people from mosquito bites. Protection measures
are illustrated on a poster newly issued by the Environmental Risk
Analysis Program.* See ERAP's West Nile Virus web pages for
user-friendly information about the disease, transmission, protection
measures, educational materials, etc.

*The full-color 11 x 17 "Mosquito Hygiene" poster (2nd
edition) contains photos of Culex mosquitoes at each stage of development
(egg, larva, pupa and adult) and practical information about mosquito
control at each life stage. Preview at:

Professional development -- Let Your Needs and Ideas be
Known - Committed to Excellence identified development of a
“comprehensive professional development plan” as a key strategy for
fostering professional excellence. The CCE Professional Development
Team has begun drafting such a plan and needs your help. The early
draft plan can be viewed or downloaded from:
http://www.cce.cornell.edu/admin/profdev/pdplan/

Also at the site you will find links (in the navigation buttons on the
left) to feedback and recommendation forms for both the professional
development plan and New Staff Introduction. Please take this opportunity
to help guide CCE Professional Development and encourage others to do so
also! Thank you for your help.

Last Call for Friend of Extension Nominations -- The deadline for
nominations for Epsilon Sigma Phi's Friend of Extension Award has been
extended to Monday, July 15, 2002. This is your last chance
to submit your nomination. In honor of the centennial year of 4-H,
this year's award focuses on an individual who has been a friend of our
4-H Youth Development Program. Please take the time to nominate the
many deserving people who have been supportive of the 4-H program and are
worthy of recognition particularly during this special centennial
year. Because the Friend of Extension award is such a prestigious
award please be very descriptive in your application. Please forward your
nominees to Cathann Kress at cak29@cornell.edu.

CCE Week and National 4-H Week Theme -- The theme for this year's
Cornell Cooperative Extension Week and National 4-H Week will center on
4-H Youth Development. The theme is especially appropriate this
year as we observe the National 4-H Centennial -- and reinforce our state
slogan of "4-H (Still) Takes You Places." We're also
building off of the catch phrase that CCE Assistant Director Cathann
Kress created, "4-H is millions of opportunities, thousands of
youth, one hundred years ... one great idea!" We celebrate
Cornell Cooperative Extension Week each year during National 4-H Week --
which this year will be October 6-12. Mark your calendars
now!

A(CCE)E 2002: A Kaleidoscope of Learning -- Webster's Dictionary
defines "kaleidoscope" as anything that constantly changes.
Constant change is a certainty in the world in which we live and in our
everyday lives. The ACCEE 2002 Conference will demonstrate a
kaleidoscope of learning opportunities through workshops, poster
sessions, awards and recognition, music and dance, professional meetings,
and informal networking. The October 16-18, 2002, ACCEE Conference
is not just in Ithaca -- it's on Ithaca's "South Hill," better
known to some as the site of the beautiful Ithaca College campus.
It will be a great time to literally see things from a new
perspective. The conference steering committee is working hard to
ensure there's something for everyone. Mark your calendar now and
take advantage of this opportunity to share new ideas with your campus-
and county-based colleagues. Online registration should be
available within the week through

Martha Stewart Kids -- Dutchess County 4-H is featured prominently
in the Summer Issue of Martha Stewart Kids. The editor's page and
the eight-page spread featuring 4-H in Dutchess County is a wonderful
recognition to 4-H programming. Plan to check it out by picking up
a copy.
