I've just come from the rollout of the FY2004 budget request for the U.S.
Geological Survey. How much of an increase is sought for the study of the
impact of WNV on wildlife? 
 
Nada. Zip. Zilch. Not one dime. 
 
In fact, the part of the USGS mapping program (Geographic Analysis and Monitoring)
that produces maps of the kind that show the distribution and movement of
disease would be cut. In other words, the funds for the program that includes
the research project called 
<h4>Understanding the Geographic Pathways of West Nile Virus</h4>
would be gone. 
 
This is the real world of Washington, D.C.
