Subject: FWD from US EPA re: New Mosquito Repellents Picaridin and
Oil of Eucalyptus

In early May 2005, you undoubtedly heard about a recent CDC release
regarding updated information about mosquito repellents. Through that
release the CDC reported on two other repellents, picaridin and oil
of eucalyptus, which demonstrate repellency comparable to DEET in
either high or low concentrations, respectively. If you had not seen
the CDC report, please visit
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/resources/uprepinfo.pdf
The update basically says that of the EPA registered active
ingredients DEET and picaridin have demonstrated a higher degree of
efficacy and provide longer-lasting protection than others. It also
says that two recent studies show that oil of lemon eucalyptus
provides similar protection to repellents with low concentrations of
DEET.
With mosquito season upon us, we all receive inquiries about
repellents. In order to better equip you to respond to these
inquiries, I provide as below a few noteble web links to more
information.
Please note that the EPA web site on Repellents has been recently
updated, now reflecting a link to the existing Oil of Eucalyptus fact
sheet, as well as a NEW EPA fact sheet on Picaridin. Please visit :
http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/insectrp.htm
EUCALYPTUS OIL: Eucalyptus Oil was registered in 2000. Although the
fact sheet is a pretty poor example, here is a link to the it:
http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/biopesticides/ingredients/factsheets/factsheet_plant-oils.htm
OPP's web site has information about oil of lemon eucalyptus (see
"eucalyptus oil" or "p-menthane-3,8-diol" under
http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/biopesticides/ingredients/index.htm).
There are links to 3 fact sheets and the Reregistration Eligibility
Decision, depending on how much information you really want.
Check out the Repellent fact sheet at the University of Arizona which
mentions Eucalyptus Oil at
http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/summary/az1311ndx.html
PIRCARIDIN:
Check out the NEW EPA fact sheet on Picaridin at
http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/insectrp.htm
You may want to look at the evaluation done by the World Health
Organization at:
http://www.who.int/whopes/quality/en/Icaridin_spec_eval_Oct_2004.pdf
[It's not really appropriate for public use, but provides some
material for your information. You'll notice that it is for
"icaridin", which carries the same CAS number as picaridin
(basically, they're the same thing].
According to the pesticide registration database (see links below),
there are 8 products already registered with picaridin as an active
ingredient.
If you go to the following web addresses you can download the labels
for the picaridin products.
