The sort of 'guide' that you really need has two legs and lots of experience. Not something you can pick up at a bookstore. Training, by someone who has a good working knowledge of mosquito identification and of an identification key that applies to your region, is essential. Most major mosquito identification guides have introductory sections showing the anatomical features used in their keys. It boils done to hard work, learning how to recognize the diagnostic features and then separating species by the right combination of unique features. Your local mosquito abatement district and/or mosquito control association may be able to recommend a trainer and a useful identification key.
