I just checked the CDC web site listing West Nile cases and fatalities (apparently through today---Tuesday Dec 3, 2002).

http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/wncount.htm

My little spreadsheet is appended [list doesn't allow attachments] sorted by number of cases and divided into three groups (20 or fewer cases in 2002), 21-100 cases, and over 100 cases.

The Case Fatality rates for these three arbitrary groups are 4.95%, 6.73%, and 4.77%.

There are some anomalies that would be interesting to clarify. Why is there 1 death per 284 cases in Indiana (0.35%) compared with 41 out of 523 cases (7.84%) in Michigan (adjacent states).

It's too bad there's no demographic breakdown to these data.

The greatest number of cases are in Midwestern States including Ohio, Louisiana, Texas, but sparing some such as Kansas and Iowa.

It will be interesting to compare this to the 2001 data, if one predicts the greatest number of cases in virgin areas.
