Reported by the NY Times, Wed July 9, 2003: National Briefing: South By THE NEW YORK TIMES SOUTH CAROLINA: WEST NILE VIRUS VICTIM An elderly man from Oconee County is the first in the nation to test positive for the West Nile Virus this year, the Department of Health and Environmental Control said. Officials said he was infected when bitten by mosquitoes while fishing in June. Tests conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the presence of the virus. A department spokeswoman, Claire Boatman, said the man has recovered. The virus was first detected in New York four years ago. It had spread to California and reached Canada by 2002. (NYTRNG)
