Subject: [WNV-L] Efficacy of VecTest for WNV Detection (2)

Date: July 15, 2003
Posted by: Joseph Therrien <jetherri@gw.dec.state.ny.us>

Subject: VecTest Updated results

An update in data on the WNV VecTest (see
http://environmentalrisk.cornell.edu/WNV/WNVEducDocs/VecTestTissueResults.xls) .

The highest prevalence of false positives are in heart blood. Watch for
bloody oral cavities that might result in blood being picked up in the
oral swab and this might then cause a false positive in the VecTest.
Bloody oral cavities are not uncommon in birds dying from traumatic
injuries (e.g. cars, hitting windows). Live mist netted and other
trapped wild birds may have lower prevalences of bloody oral cavities.
