WEST NILE CASES HOLD STEADY Four people in the United States have 
contracted West Nile virus infections this year, the same number 
reported at this time last year, but the virus itself is spreading 
faster this year, federal health officials reported. In 2002, there 
were 4,156 cases of West Nile fever and 284 deaths. This year, three 
cases have been diagnosed in Texas and one in South Carolina. Tests 
in birds, animals and mosquitoes have found the virus in 32 states, 
compared with 20 a year ago.    Denise Grady (NYT)
