WNV Update - July 23, 2002: 6 more human cases, also in Black

WHERE:
Since the WNV Update posted July 18, 2002, West Nile Virus has been detected in 2 additional states where it was also reported in 2001 (Iowa and Mississippi). WNV has been detected in at least 28 states in the US and 3 Canadian provinces in 2002, as compared with 8 states and Washington DC as of July 24 last year.
The number of HUMAN CASES has increased to at least 13 (11 in Louisiana, 1 in Texas and 1 in Mississippi). All have been confirmed in the last 48 hours except for the 7 cases previously reported in LA.
As of July 23, 2002, at least 49 EQUINE CASES have been reported (Florida-15, Kentucky-1, Louisiana-16, North Dakota-1, Tennessee-1, and Texas-15). 8 of the Florida cases and the case in Tennessee are newly reported since July 18.
BLACK BEARS in Northwest New Jersey, tested in February and March 2002 as part of a neutralizing antibody serosurvey, tested positive in 3 of 51 samples (mostly adult females). These data will be published shortly and reported at the upcoming NMCA and NJMCA meetings. Samples were collected by the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Services, prepared by Rutgers, and analyzed by CDC in Fort Collins, Colorado. At least 3 ZOO BIRDS from the captive collection at the US National Zoo in Washington DC have tested positive for West Nile Virus -- two flamingo chicks and a Eurasian wigeon (duck), with results still out on 12 more birds from the captive collection that died since early July (5 flamingos, 3 smew, 2 mergansers, 1 blue-winged teal, and 1 wigeon). Tests are being performed by the Cornell University Veteriniary Diagnostics Laboratory. [Details were given in a July 19 posting to this listserv]

CANADA--Toronto, Ontario--WNV detected in a bird in the city of Toronto (S. Ontario).
Manitoba--Two more birds test positive from the Rural Municipalities of St. Andrews (N. of Winnipeg) and Ritchot (S. of Winnipeg), both are located along the Red River.
FLORIDA--8 More horses test WNV-positive. Five horses have died, 3 are recovering. The horses were from Seminole Co (Central FL), Okeechobee Co (S. Central FL), Orange Co (Central FL, location of Orlando), Levy Co (N. Central Fl, on Gulf of Mexico), Manatee Co (Central FL, on Gulf of Mexico), Volusia Co (Central FL, on Atlantic Ocean), and Columbia Co (N. FL, on Georgia border).
GEORGIA--A fourth county detects WNV. Putnam Co (Central GA) detected WNV in a crow.
ILLINOIS--11 more counties detect WNV, bringing the total to 30 counties in 2002. Two more mosquito pools test positive in Cook Co (Chicago Metro Area). New counties include: Gallatin, Henry, LaSalle, Lee, Madison, Marion, Peoria, Rock Island, St. Clair, and Winnebago.
INDIANA--Mosquito pools test positive for WNV in Marion Co (Central IN, location of Indianapolis).
IOWA--WNV found for the first time this year in 2 birds from Scott Co (E. IA, on Illinois border).
LOUISIANA--4 More human cases announced July 22, bringing the total to 11 cases in 2002. Three of the individuals are from East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes, which are the first ever human cases there. The other individual is from Hammond where this year's first human case of WNV was reported earlier this month.
Case 8 - Hammond (Tangipahoa Parish), male, 88 years of age. Onset of symptoms was June 15. Hospitalized.
Case 9 - Gonzales (Ascension Parish), female 87 years of age. Onset of symptoms was June 28. She has been discharged from a local hospital and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Case 10 - Baton Rouge (E. Baton Rouge Parish), female, 72 years of age. Onset of symptoms was July 6. Hospitalized.
Case 11 - Slaughter (E. Baton Rouge Parish), female, 81 years of age. Onset of symptoms was July 4. Hospitalized.
MASSACHUSETTS--Three more cities detect WNV in Massachusetts. Detections were in Saugus (Essex Co, NE MA), Melrose (Middlesex Co, E. MA), and Woburn (Middlesex Co, E. MA).
MICHIGAN--Three more counties detect WNV. WNV was detected in Tuscola Co (E. MI), Muskegon Co (W. MI, on Lake Michigan), and Saginaw Co (S. Central MI).
MISSISSIPPI--Man confirmed with WNV from Central Mississippi. A middle-aged man from Hinds Co (Central MS) has been hospitalized with WNV, onset July 12. Also, 5 horses have been confirmed with WNV from Scott Co (Central MS), Wilkinson Co (SW MS, on Louisiana border), Hancock Co (SE MS, on Louisiana and Gulf of Mexico borders), Harrison Co (SE MS, on Gulf of Mexico), and Pearl River Co (SE MS, on Louisiana border). Horses from Rankin Co (Central MS), Franklin Co (SW MS), and Jackson Co (SE MS, on Alabama and Gulf of Mexico borders) are suspected of having WNV, results are pending. The first positive WNV result was ann July 18 in birds from Panola Co (N MS) and Hinds Co (Central MS).
MISSOURI--Second bird tests positive for WNV in Missouri this year. The bird was found in St. Louis City.
NEW YORK--Two more counties and 1 more borough of NYC detect WNV, bringing the total to 12 counties and 3 boroughs of NYC that have detected WNV in 2002. WNV was detected in birds from Oneida Co (Central NY) and Onondaga Co (Central NY, location of Syracuse). WNV was detected in mosquito pools from Brooklyn (NYC). So far in 2002, 17 mosquito pools have tested WNV-positive, all from NYC (14 from Staten Island, 2 from Brooklyn, 1 from Bronx).
OHIO--59 counties have now detected WNV of the 88 counties in Ohio. New detections were from Allen Co, Athens Co, Green Co, and Portage Co.
PENNSYLVANIA--Mosquito pool tests positive in Delaware Co (SE PA, on Delaware border) for the first time this year.
TENNESSEE--A horse tests WNV-positive for the first time this year from Jefferson Co (E. TN).
TEXAS--The first human case of WNV in Texas was confirmed July 23 in a 50-year-old man from Orange Co (E. TX, on Louisiana border). Houston has tested 536 people infected with meningitis or encephalitis of unknown cause since 2001; this is the first positive result. 15 horses have tested WNV-positive in Texas this year. Positive results have been from Austin Co (1), Harris Co (3), Jefferson Co (2), Montgomery Co (3), Orange Co (3), and Waller Co (3).
VIRGINIA--Hanover Co (E. Central VA) detects WNV for the first time this year in a bird found July 15.
WASHINGTON D.C.--22 more birds test positive in the district.
